…is an abstract study of an ordinary object that is widely used by everyone. While working on this piece I would leave the image on my screen for days and look at it from a distance to determine the mood and story I wish to convey. The first thing that came to mind was a Dancing Dervish, or rather, Whirling Dervish. Even though in my original proposal I said that this is not what it was, however, after more research I realized that is exactly what I was seeing. It wasn’t until after the creation and consequent study that this notion was of a man with a long skirt and puffy white sleeves dancing. It burbled in my subconscious that somehow I became influenced by the costume from Turkey and the architecture and sky of Santorini. A dancer floating in the sky. It’s a Turkish-Santorinian in the abstract. When I was creating this piece I also kept seeing the scene of a white hot sun and the cerulean sky as the man dances in the joy of the air. The right side depicts him flipping his skirt on a cloud and the left side of this image is a detail of the flipped up “skirt”. These images float with calm energy, soft light and a cool breeze from the skirt’s breath.
